There’s something special about welcoming familiar faces year after year. Herb and Emi are two of those faces for us. For more than 10 years, they’ve been booking the same Unit 309 every January through March without fail.

Drive ten minutes north of Kā'anapali and everything changes. The resorts disappear. The road gets quieter. The buildings get smaller. And suddenly you're in Honokowai and Kahana, the stretch of coast where people have been coming for decades, long before anyone called it "luxury."

Not about schedules. Not about the kids. Not about who's picking up what or when the plumber is coming. An actual conversation, the kind you used to have, where you remembered why you chose this person in the first place.

Twenty minutes to Kihei's beaches and restaurants. Twenty minutes to the Lahaina side and Kā'anapali. Twenty minutes to the upcountry roads that take you to Haleakalā. Fifteen minutes to the airport, which matters more than you think when you're catching an early flight home.

We don't charge resort fees. There's no parking fee because parking is free, right outside your door, not in a garage across a courtyard. There's no "destination amenity fee" because we don't know what that means either.

Here's something most people don't realize about Maui: The island has microclimates. Some parts get 400 inches of rain per year (that's the Road to Hana side—gorgeous, but wet). But South Maui, where Kihei sits, is in the rain shadow of Haleakalā.

Right now, somewhere off Maui's coast, a 40-ton humpback whale is breaching. And hundreds of tourists are paying $90 a head to watch it from a crowded catamaran, fighting for rail space, trying not to spill their complimentary Mai Tai. Meanwhile, our guests staying in Honokawai to Kihei are enjoying the same majestic whale from the comfort of their lanais. Coffee in hand. Bathrobe on. No worries about seasickness or jostling for the perfect photo.
