Best Pizza with a View

Upcountry- Kula

The Garden Terrace at Kula Lodge

Sure, the Garden Terrace at Kula Lodge has handmade pizza, topped with local, quality ingredients, cooked outdoors in a hobbit-like Kiawe wood fired brick oven. But place that pie among stunning grounds with covered tables dotting an exquisite tropical garden, with verdant rolling hills fading into sweeping bi-coastal views, and you have something more out of a fairytale book than an actual place. You can build your own artisan pizza, featuring handmade pizza crust, San Marzano tomato sauce and fresh mozzarella. They are truly delicious.

The Garden Terrace also offers a full and diverse menu with locally sourced ingredients. Nearby, dining inside the lodge makes these two spots popular for visitors going to and from Haleakala Crater, as well as locals. While the dining experience is always enjoyable, the wait can be not so much fun. Target off peak times between breakfast and lunch or lunch and dinner, or take up any extra time by wandering the grounds and visiting the adjacent Kula Country Store. Current restaurant hours are Tuesday – Friday: 9am – 2:30pm, Saturday – Monday: 7:30am – 2:30pm. Walk-in only.

Upcountry- Pukalani

Restaurant Marlow
What happens when a renown Maui chef opens a pizza restaurant and partners with a new craft brewery? Yum with a view! Restaurant Marlow bravely opened in Upcountry Maui during the pandemic last year, and has been making a saucy splash ever since. Chef-owner Jeff Scheer specializes in wood-oven sourdough pizza, along with locally sourced meats and vegetables from Kupa’a Farms and Malama Farm, among others. Along with wife Kaili Scheer and other family members, Marlow is making some truly gourmet pies, worth a venture upcountry.

Next door, Mahalo Aleworks brewery and taproom boasts an amazing selection of Maui craft beers (plus wine and other drinks for non beer drinkers). Enjoy any of Marlow’s pizza or other menu items on Mahalo’s lanai, with stunning bi-coastal views of Maui. Order takeaway online from Restaurant Marlow for your upcountry adventures or or walk-in daily from 4:30-9pm or lunch Wednesdays through Sundays from 11am to 2pm.

West Side- Lahaina

Pi Artisan Pizza
If you are going to have pizza in your name, you better make a good pie. Pi Artisan Pizza on Front Street in Lahaina does not disappoint. The secret is their special 800-degree kiawe wood-burning oven. You can also watch your pizza being made through a glass enclosure. There are crust options, the topping selection is ample, and the menu includes some other really great Italian dishes, including a savory giant meatball appetizer. What makes Pi special is the open-air patio with an unobstructed view of the ocean right across the street. Open for lunch, happy hour, dinner, and late-night, as long as you skip prime lunch and dinner hours, seating is easy-breezy.

Best Take to the Beach Pizza

South Maui- Kihei

Shaka Pizza and Sandwiches
Shaka Pizza has been an island staple for decades, and for good reason. Their New York-style pizza has dough and sauce that are freshly made every day with no preservatives. You can order a full pizza with your favorite toppings, choose one of their special or gourmet pizzas. For a vacation budget-saver,  grab a just a slice of pizza and make it to the sand by sunset. You can easily walk to Kalama beach park, just a half block away.

If you’re not in the mood for pizza, forget about it! Shaka is also famous for their NY cheese steak on homemade Italian bread.

The Outrigger Pizza Truck

The Outrigger Pizza Truck brings Maui’s first mobile woodfired pizza oven to the island. While the truck does travel the island for events and catering featuring their ono pizzas, you can usually find them located across the street from Shaka Pizza in the Kukui Mall parking lot Monday through Saturday.

West Maui- Kahana

Dollies
Dollies is the place we used to go when dating- it’s a fun place to hang out, with two daily happy hours, and big screen TVs to watch sports. We continue to go back for the pizza- again and again! Dollies fits all the requirements- great crust, sauce and generous toppings, it’s a great spot to grab a pie to go and hit a myriad of West side beach parks. If you are visiting, Dollies delivers to all condos and hotels from Kaanapali to Kapalua starting at 4pm! So whether you want to mingle with the locals or get yours to go to the beach, Dollies is your West side best bet. Call 808-669-0266 for takeout or delivery. Located in Kahana at 4310 Lower Honoapiilani Rd.

Note: Dollies recently opened a Paia location. Haven’t tried it yet, but if it is as good as their west side spot, Northshore people are in for a treat!

Northshore- Paia

Flatbread Company
Located on the Northshore of Maui, Flatbread Company ranks high in review sites for pizza on Maui. Not my fave due to the thin, cracker-like crust and toppings that don’t come near the edge, it’s worth a mention because others seem to like it. The interior is spacious, shaded and cozy, with a central wood-fired pizza oven and interesting salads. For takeout, Paia beach is within walking distance, and Baldwin Beach Park is just a half mile down the road. You can order pickup online or walk in.

Final fun Hawaii pizza fact

“Hawaiian Style” pizza with ham (or Canadian Bacon) and pineapple is not popular with the locals on Maui, but you might be able to find those ingredients in pizza place here. Despite the name, Hawaiian Style pizza did not come from Hawaii, or even the U.S. The pizza was actually created in Canada in 1962 by a Greek immigrant called Sam Panopoulos. Panopoulos, along with his brothers, owned a restaurant in the province of Ontario.

What’s your favorite pizza place with a view on Maui? With so many delicious decisions, you may have to try more than one!
